Surviving Bolivia's Death Road: A Wild Ride from Fear to Fulfillment

Before my trip to Bolivia, I only knew about the "Death Road" or "El Camino de la Muerte" in Spanish from watching "Queen of the South," a TV series about a determined Mexican woman who rises to wealth by building a massive drug empire. Seeing it on screen piqued my curiosity, and I was eager to experience it firsthand.

Fast forward to actually being there and tackling the “Death Road" of Bolivia. Let me tell you, it's no joke. They don't call it one of the most dangerous roads in the world for nothing.

Here's the thing, I'm not exactly what you'd call a biking enthusiast. And as for using a dual suspension mountain bike? Yeah, that was a first for me. So, you can imagine, taking on this challenge was no walk in the park.

As we kicked off the tour, news of a recent bike accident and the sight of an ambulance racing to the hospital heightened my nerves. But despite the jitters and the butterflies, I knew I couldn't pass up on this opportunity. So, I took a deep breath, pushed my fears aside, and dove right in. As we biked along the death road, the landscape was both beautiful and eerie, with flowers and crosses marking spots where accidents had occurred. There were even remnants of a bus that had plunged off the cliff. At one point, there was a mix-up with bikes, which could have been risky given the different brake setups, but thankfully, our vigilant tour guide caught it in time.

Surviving 62 kilometers of rugged, downhill biking, from snow-covered peaks to the lush Amazonian jungle, felt like a monumental achievement. And to cap it off, I decided to extend the adrenaline rush by ziplining for a bird's-eye view of the Death Road.

A heartfelt gracias to Pachamama (Mother Earth) for keeping us safe, and a huge shoutout to the incredible guides from Gravity Tours for their unwavering support and expertise!

Ending my Bolivian adventure with adrenaline-pumping activities was the perfect finale. Call me crazy, but there's something about facing your fears head-on that leaves me feeling incredibly fulfilled.
